As if shimmering rays of light pierce into a void from which there is no return, densely twisted metallic strands outstretched ask the question: what is beyond the edge? This is Léas, meaning 'shimmer' in Irish, by artist and bladesmith Erik Gullikson. Forged to shape from Dense Twist pattern Damasteel, the high-performance stainless damascus crafted in Sweden's north at a facility that has produced steel without stoppage since the late 1600s and coveted by culinary knifemakers worldwide, the blade's remarkable finish is unlike any other. To achieve the mirror polish along the edge while revealing the pattern's tendrils in perfect contrast, an impression that will neither fade nor tarnish with time, Erik undertook a meticulous multi-stage etching, grinding, polishing, and re-etching process. The results speak for themselves. That the material began its life as a round bar only adds to the allure of the accomplishment. But it is not, of course, only about exceptionally good looks. As expected of Gullikson, the geometry, profile, and balance of the 155mm crescent-style bunka blade make it a culinary tool worthy of any chef. Tall and convex, the symmetrical bevels slim downward to a near-zero edge, only the finest sliver of a secondary bevel needed. The mass Erik maintains above the cutting edge is purposefully controlled from heel to tip, slimming subtly while ensuring ample toughness, food release, and capability are exactly as intended. Above the 55mm heel the rounded spine measures nearly 4mm across, tapering to 2mm at the midpoint, 1mm half an inch from the tip, and further still, the blade's cross-section practically disappearing into the void along with the wisps of steel behind it. At 4.6oz / 130g overall with a balance point around one inch in front of the heel, the knife is steady and nimble in the hand, giving it the feel of a larger knife packaged in a design meant to perform every cut in the kitchen no matter how compact the workspace. Slim, beautifully finished, and adaptable to every hand and style of grip, Léas is wielded at the cutting board by a handle in Erik's heirloom geometric form, sculpted from curly mango wood accented with black resin composite.
