Lewisia oppositifolia is a rare and attractive perennial native to the Siskiyou Mountains of southern Oregon and northern California, typically found in rocky serpentine outcrops and open forest clearings. This compact plant forms a basal rosette of succulent, spatula-shaped leaves that are often tinged with red or maroon, particularly in full sun. In spring, it produces short flowering stems bearing clusters of delicate, star-shaped white flowers. Adapted to dry summer conditions and well-drained soils, Lewisia oppositifolia is ideal for alpine and rock gardens where drainage is excellent and competition from other plants is minimal. It prefers full sun to partial shade and benefits from a dormant dry period, mimicking its natural habitat. This species is not only valued for its beauty and drought tolerance but also for its ability to thrive in tough, low-nutrient soils. Zones 3-8 Germination Lewisia oppositifolia seeds require a period of cold stratification to break dormancy and improve germination rates. Sow the seeds on the surface of a well-draining seed-starting mix, pressing them lightly into the soil without covering, as light aids germination. After sowing, keep the tray moist and place it in a cold environment around 4°C (39°F), such as a refrigerator, for 4 to 6 weeks. After stratification, move the tray to a bright, cool location with temperatures around 15–20°C (59–68°F). Germination can be slow and erratic, sometimes taking several weeks to months. Once seedlings emerge, allow them to grow until they are strong enough to be transplanted, ensuring excellent drainage and avoiding overwatering to prevent root rot.
