Size:21 x 16 in. The Connor Brothers’ original piece Library Study XVI, sized at 17" x 12", is a witty and thought-provoking composition which distils their fascination with truth, fiction and cultural commentary into a playful visual form. Painted to resemble a collection of worn vintage Penguin paperbacks, each book spine is inscribed with sardonic, ironic or provocative titles that mock societal norms and human behaviours. Subtle ink marks, paint swatches and a cheeky coffee cup stain further enhance the sense of a lived-in, imperfect world, inviting viewers to reflect on the blurred lines between order and chaos, reality and imagination. The work sits firmly within The Connor Brothers’ celebrated practice of blending retro imagery with sharp, often humorous text. Mike Snelle and James Golding originally created the fictional backstory of the Connor Brothers to shield themselves from the vulnerabilities of exhibiting art under their real identities. This experiment in fiction and truth not only captivated the art world but became a central theme of their practice. Through their playful, ironic works, the duo encourage audiences to challenge assumptions and question the narratives they consume. Library Study XVI offers a glimpse into the intellectual and emotional playfulness that has made their art so compelling and resonant across the globe.
