LIFE has been making notebooks and paper goods in Tokyo since 1949, and this one borrows its format from the classic American steno pad. The center line running down each page was originally there for Gregg shorthand, a system that splits the page into two narrow columns so a stenographer could write fast notes without running out of room. LIFE kept the format but gave it their own quiet, retro cover design. Useful as an actual notebook for fast notetaking, but the center rule also works well for to-do lists, two-column comparisons, or anything else that benefits from a built-in divider.
