Created by Tracky Crombie and Emmy Oldenbourg - two close friends working in different cities. This project started with a request to visualise the amount of light across the year, to feel the change in time more, to be more connected to our world; the seasons, nature and to be less reliant on our technology to show us what our bodies know. We met at the key shifts in this year (at the solstice, and the equinoxes) to try to turn what science tells us into something we could see. This image is the result - a year of light and dark. We often imagine the seasons as steady, but in truth, the pace of change ebbs and flows. Around the equinoxes, light gains or fades with a startling quickness — one day you notice the evenings have stretched or the dawn has suddenly retreated. Then, near the solstices, time seems to pause. “Solstice” itself comes from sol (sun) and stasis (to stand still): the moment when the sun’s journey hesitates at the edges of the year. An inky sky reflecting the changes, somewhere between precision and expression. We hope this image allows you to relax into the shifts, acknowledge the sky above us, notice the colours, the depth of it and look up and out a little more. This is our first iteration of what we hope will be a collaboration for years to come, finding new ways to reflect a year of our world.
