Bauwerk Prep Coat is specially formulated to create the ideal base coat for Bauwerk Limewash. It is suitable for interior surfaces only which are usually decorated with a conventional paint that does not allow limewash to penetrate into. By building a bridge between a previously painted or non-absorbent surface, it provides the right amount of absorbency for the longevity of the limewash and enabling a smoother application of it. Coverage & Specifications Average coverage per coat, per litre applied: 6 m2 It is important to understand that Bauwerk Limewash and Prep Coat have no capacity to mask the history of your walls. Bauwerk Prep Coat is not a sealer or primer that can block out stains or equalise absorbency differences. Surfaces receiving limewash must be properly prepared beforehand with a water-based sealer and primer, and drywall or repaired surfaces must be treated to create a surface of equal absorbency to prevent “ghosting”. Ghosting occurs when plasterboard joint lines or patched/repaired areas showing through your finished limewashed walls, or due to uneven absorbency across the surface—typically due to inconsistent sealing or priming before painting. Care & Maintenance If you are painting over sealed or previously painted walls, it is essential to know that limewash isn’t as indestructible as more conventional, non-natural paints. To improve durability and simplify application over sealed or previously painted interior walls, we highly recommend Bauwerk Prep Coat. Acting as an absorbent layer, Prep Coat facilitates limewash adhesion and can be applied easily by a roller. Like all surfaces subject to wear and tear, over time your limewashed walls may require maintenance. To maintain your walls, we recommend simply applying a light refresher coat of limewash. It is quick, easy and makes your walls more beautiful and durable with every layer. To clean limewashed walls, we recommend lightly wiping with a clean, damp cloth. Ensure that you do not scrub, use excessive water or use any soaps on the limewash, as this will damage the surface. Do not clean your limewashed wall too soon after painting. Limewash becomes more durable after it has cured and hardened on the surface. Allow up to 2 weeks for your walls to properly cure.
