Liquidambar styraciflua 'Oconee' Rare Oconee Sweet Gum Zones 5-9 Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Oconee’ (Oconee Sweetgum) is a compact, rounded cultivar of the American sweetgum valued f or its showy fall foliage and manageable size. It features glossy, star-shaped leaves that turn deep red, burgundy, orange, and purple in autumn. Unlike the full species that can grow very large, ‘Oconee’ stays much smaller and slower-growing, typically reaching around 8–10 ft tall and 6–8 ft wide in 10–20 years, making it suitable for smaller gardens or as a specimen accent.
