Discover the timeless art of lithography, one of the most fascinating and expressive printmaking techniques. In this beginner-friendly workshop, you'll experience the unique process where oil and water work together to create beautifully detailed prints. Using pre-grained A5 lithography plates, you'll learn the traditional methods of drawing, processing, inking, and printing your own artwork on a professional etching press. Whether you're completely new to printmaking or simply curious about this historic medium, this hands-on workshop is the perfect introduction. What is Lithography? Lithography is a traditional printmaking technique based on the principle that oil and water repel each other. Unlike relief or intaglio printing, the image is created on a flat surface by drawing with greasy materials, which are then chemically processed to attract ink only where the drawing exists. In this workshop, we use plate lithography, a modern adaptation of the traditional stone process. Lightweight aluminum plates offer the same fundamental principles and expressive drawing qualities as stone lithography while being more accessible and practical for learning. From your original drawing to pulling prints on the press, you'll experience the complete lithographic process and create your own edition of beautiful, handcrafted prints. What You'll Learn During this workshop you will: Create an original drawing directly onto a pre-grained A5 lithography plate using traditional lithography crayons and pencils. Learn how the lithographic process works, including the chemistry behind oil and water. Etch and prepare your plate for printing. Ink your plate using professional lithography techniques. Print your own edition of original lithographs on the etching press to take home. Who Is This Workshop For? This workshop is perfect for: Complete beginners with no prior experience.
