"Water source, Well 33, WA" SOLD Travelling extensively around Australia, from the coast and to the Outback, I am often struck by the sense of “rupture” in the landscape; be it jagged cliff edges by the ocean or sites in the desert where differing geological forces have caused a disjuncture, often creating danger and threat but also beauty and succour. This painting evokes the country around the Great Sandy Desert in Western Australia, close to Well 33 on the Canning Stock Route, where I worked a decade ago and a place which resonates strongly within my painting. Within the harshness of the Great Sandy Desert, this “rupture” site, where water is accessed from deep below, provides an important source of water in this extremely remote and arid country, whilst also being a deeply sacred area for the Martu people.
