The metal shoes can short out your contacts on your flash, and the thumbscrew is all that stands between you and the fancy new flash falling off of your stand. Here's the MoLight Locking Cold Shoe to the rescue! Featuring a standard 1/4-20 threaded port on the bottom, this shoe will mount to most light stands. But the two best features are: it is made out of a durable composite plastic that makes it lightweight and tough at the same time; and, then spring-loaded tension back stop makes sure your flash will NEVER slide off the shoe.
