One wolf calling into the dark A single wolf sits on this jacket with its head tipped back, mid howl. It is the image everyone recognises, and it is usually misread. Wolves do not howl out of loneliness. A howl carries for miles across still air and works as a location signal, a roll call and a boundary marker all at once. What a lone wolf actually is Most wolves travelling alone are young, often between one and three years old, and they have left home on purpose. Biologists call it dispersal. The wolf is crossing unfamiliar ground looking for territory nobody has claimed and a mate to hold it with. It is a stage of life rather than a temperament, and for the ones that make it, it ends in company. There is more on the sound itself in why wolves howl. Fabric and fit Thick and cosy, with an organic cotton interior next to the skin and a polyester exterior, closed by a reinforced zip. Machine wash at 30 degrees.
