Toadstool corals (often Sarcophyton species) are soft corals known for their large, leathery “cap” and a thick stalk, giving them a mushroom- or toadstool-like appearance. They often have a smooth or slightly textured surface and can extend fine polyps across their cap, especially under moderate lighting and flow. Their flowing, gentle movement and relatively easy care make them a popular choice for both beginner and experienced reef aquarists. They thrive in stable water conditions (temperature ~76–80°F, salinity ~1.025, alkalinity 8–9 dKH, calcium 400–450 ppm, magnesium 1250–1350 ppm) and are generally hardy, tolerating a range of environments. They can release a protective mucous layer, especially when stressed or during shedding, so good water movement helps remove it. While they rely mainly on photosynthesis, they benefit from clean, nutrient-balanced water and can occasionally absorb dissolved or fine particulate foods, though direct feeding is not usually necessary.
