About the craft: Ancient appliqué craft in India has roots in the Indus Valley civilisation. A technique where pieces of fabric are glued or embroidered on a bigger piece of fabric, appliqué was traditionally used to reinforce old fabric or repair torn fabric. During the Mughal era the technique gained relevance and began to used in luxurious designs. It is known by different names in different parts of India depending on the intricacy and style of patchwork done. About the fabric: We have used a patch worked appliqué bedspread made by women artisans from the border desert villages of Rajasthan. A light/ medium weight fabric, each piece is one-of-a-kind. The material was then stonewashed to give it a subtle, more distressed appearance.
