The porcelain pieces are formed by hand before being fired in a kiln for the first time to the "bisque" stage. As bisque, the clay is still fragile, but is now a bit more durable and won't dissolve if I get it wet. I sand away any initial rough spots, and then apply a glaze before firing them to around 2200*F. The kiln can take a couple of days to go from room temperature to 2200*F and back to room temperature. After this, I apply a coating of lustre (precious metal particles suspended in a liquid medium) and fire it a final time. The liquid burns away, leaving a luscious layer of precious metal on the surface. Then I give them a final sanding and polishing and they are ready for me to add the metal components, package them up, and send them out into the world.
