The medieval origin of this gesture is linked to the Hundred Years' War, when captured English and Welsh archers who terrorized the French had these two fingers on their right hand chopped off so they could not hold a bow. The archers, knowing about this, teased the French before the battle, showing them intact fingers, saying, "Fear, enemies!".
