When the M4 medium tank first saw action with the British Army at El Alamein it represented a qualitative step change in performance, with its 75mm gun in a powered turret. Dubbed the Sherman by the British, this name was later adopted by the US. The most produced American tank of the war, the M4 was the initial version and though it was later modified, it showcased the tank's advantages - it was reliable, easy to maintain, relatively fast and had superior ergonomics. The Sherman was the mainstay of the American army, and the breakout from the Normandy beaches could never been achieved without their support.
