Macoun is an excellent apple for cold climates – it is cold hardy, and it blooms relatively late, making it less likely to be damaged by the occasional very late frost. Macoun appl es are crisp, juicy, medium-sized, and ripen late in the season. This is an apple that is excellent fresh off the tree, but they have a short shelf life, so don’t expect it to hold up well in storage. Disease resistance: Resistant to fire blight, susceptible to apple scab. Parentage: McIntosh x Jersey Black. Developed at the NY Agricultural Experimental Station in Geneva. First crossed 1909, released 1923, and named for the Canadian fruit breeder W. T.
