A perennial mint relative with attractive, white-throated, rather showy purple flowers. In the wild, skullcap is found growing near marshes, meadows, and partially shaded wetlands; similarly, it will do well in moist garden conditions. Historically used for treating insomnia, anxiety, and other ailments of the nervous system, the leaves make a tasty, soothing tea. It was also traditionally used for treating rabies (hence "Mad Dog"), but we hope you don't have rabies. The edible flowers are named for their resemblance to European Medieval helmets.
