Perhaps the most powerful image of the Gesichter series, ‘Madhouse’ reinforces the double meanings that the the series’ title conjured up. The array of faces on display is varied: in the centre-left, a soldier with short-cut hair and cap smiles absently while a thin, gaunt woman opposite him motions and talks to herself; others hide their faces, unable to face the world anymore. The gathering of characters portrays a vision of those sufferers sidelined in a harsh society in the midst of a war: victims of trauma; the elderly; the mentally broken. Show more
