IUCN Red List: N/A Betta Mahachaiensis HIGHLY recommend for beginners Betta mahachaiensis is a relatively new s pecies of betta fish discovered in 2012 in the Samut Sakhon Province of Thailand. It is a member of the Betta splendens group but exhibits distinct characteristics that set it apart. Physical Characteristics Body Shape: Slender and elongated, typical of the Betta splendens complex, with a slightly compressed body. Reaches a maximum standard length of about 2 inches (5 cm), robust yet streamlined for navigating dense habitats. Tail Shape: Rounded caudal fin, short and less elaborate than Betta splendens, often with a red crescent-shaped distal band and faint black edging, resembling Betta imbellis but more robust. Coloration: Dark brown to black body with iridescent green or blue scales forming a metallic sheen. Males show vibrant red accents on caudal, anal, and pelvic fins, with intense coloration during display. Females are duller, brownish with muted red or green hints and less iridescence. Operculum: Males feature striking iridescent green or blue scales with two parallel red vertical bars (sometimes silvery or green-tinted). Females have fainter, less distinct opercular markings. Habitat: Native to brackish coastal waters of Thailand’s Samut Sakhon and Samut Songkhram provinces, particularly around Mahachai. Inhabits mangrove swamps, tidal pools, and canals with nipa palms and dense vegetation. Tolerates slightly brackish, warm (24-30°C), and acidic to neutral (pH 6-7.5) water, relying on its labyrinth organ for breathing in low-oxygen environments. Can be kept in a planted community tank of multiple females if there is adequate space.
