Saint Martin’s Day is a celebration held in mid-November and is centered on the life of Martin of Tours. It focuses on the light that can always be found in the darkest of times. The story goes that Martin the soldier came upon a beggar in the deep cold of winter with very little to protect himself from the elements. Without hesitation, Martin jumped off his steed, used his sword to cut his own cloak in two and shared it with the beggar. Martin went on to become a priest, and the patron saint of beggars everywhere. In our own time and world, it’s important to remember that we have many opportunities to “cut our cloaks in two”, triumph over the darkness, and serve others in need around us every day.
