A sphere of deep green that seems to hold its own interior weather.Malachite—Cu₂(CO₃)(OH)₂—is a copper carbonate hydroxide with Mohs hardness 3.5–4, forming where copper-rich groun dwater reacts with carbonate rock in the oxidized zones above copper ore bodies. Its signature banding reflects the layered nature of that growth: each band a pause in the mineralization cycle. Major producing regions include the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Ural Mountains of Russia, and Namibia. This sphere is polished from natural malachite, the banded surface visible from every angle.Worked as adornment and pigment across Egyptian, Greek, and Russian Imperial decorative traditions, malachite is one of the historically best-documented ornamental stones.
