Expect the unexpected in the functional artwork of Joshua Prince. In this one-of-a-kind chef’s knife, handmade at Josh’s Rhode Island studio, a dense, high-layer austenitic stainless damascus forms the blade’s outer cladding, reflecting light in unexpected and mesmerizing ways. From one angle, clearly defined alloys glimmer in blue-tinted, mountainous detail; turn it slightly and the surface transforms into a polished landscape of silver-grey. Shift again, and the blade's faces softens into harmony—three tones merging into one, the darker 440C stainless edge contrasting beautifully against the bright bevels below textured, forge-finished flats. Yet from every vantage point, one truth remains: the Mango Timascus Bunka is made to cook. The symmetrical, subtly convex bevels taper to a very thin, razor-sharp edge that glides through ingredients with precision and ease, aided by the knife’s weight and perfect balance. At 10.5oz / 300g with its center of mass just under two inches ahead of the 54mm heel, it feels steady and powerful in the hand. Robust, stiff, and rounded, the blade’s spine tapers only slightly from its 3.7mm width, imbuing a feeling of control and quiet authority over ingredients small and large. Every bit as striking as the damascus-clad blade is the handle, sculpted from richly figured mango wood in a tall, tapering octagonal form, capped with a hand-forged bolster of titanium damascus (timascus) that shimmers with iridescent depth. A unique material combination employing a rarely seen austentic cladding means this blade is non-magnetic. A knife of shifting light and layered meaning, it captures the rare intersection of art and utility, where craftsmanship becomes poetry in the hand.
