Joe Galindo was born in Mirfield, West Yorkshire in 1994 and showed a gift for drawing from an early age. At 24 he put down the brush and left for a spell working abroad, and it was that time away that sharpened the eye he brings to his animal subjects now — bold, close-cropped and full of character, built up in layers of mixed media until the personality of the sitter comes through. Maple is an original painting of a brown and white cow, worked in mixed media on board and presented framed. She is a substantial square format, and one that rewards a bit of wall space around her — the layering and mark-making really open up when you can stand back. Look closely at the eyes. Painting reflections into them is one of the things Galindo is known for, and it is what gives his animals their presence — the sense of a world outside the frame, caught in the glance. Maple has it in full, and it is the detail we find ourselves pointing out to anyone who stops in front of her.
