An exceptional petite French Louis XVI style side chest, signed A. Bougenier, beautifully constructed with intricate marquetry, gilt-bronze detailing and a remarkably thick, richly veined marble top. At just 22.5 inches wide, the scale makes this piece especially versatile. It has the craftsmanship and presence of a fine case piece without the larger proportions of a traditional commode, making it ideal beside a bed, between two chairs, in an entry, beneath a mirror or anywhere a smaller statement piece is needed. The façade features two drawers decorated with repeating marquetry circles and floral medallions, each surrounded by finely detailed metal trim. Complementary marquetry continues along the sides, while gilt-bronze floral mounts descend from the upper corners. Slender legs in decorative bronze sabots, with an additional bronze rosette centered beneath the lower drawer. The upper drawer is divided into three interior sections, adding wonderful function to the petite scale. Traditional dovetail construction is visible along the drawer sides and speaks to the quality of the cabinetmaking. One of our favorite details is what can only be seen when the piece is opened and examined closely. A. Bougenier is stamped beneath the marble and again to the underside of each drawer. With the drawers removed, handwritten workshop measurements remain visible on the interior structure—an extraordinary surviving detail from the maker's construction process and a beautiful reminder that this piece was built by hand. The marble itself deserves special mention. It is an exceptionally thick and heavy slab, beautifully figured with cream, gray, taupe, soft gold and muted burgundy veining. Its weight and substantial profile immediately speak to the overall quality of the piece. From the marquetry and dovetailed drawers to the bronze ornamentation, substantial marble and repeated maker's marks, this is a beautifully executed piece of French cabinetmaking with exceptional character and craftsmanship. History This piece is signed A. Bougenier in multiple locations, including beneath the marble and to the underside of the drawers. Its decorative vocabulary is rooted in the French Louis XVI revival tradition, characterized by restrained neoclassical proportions, delicate legs, symmetrical ornament, floral marquetry and gilt-bronze embellishment. The construction methods, decorative marquetry and overall form are consistent with fine French furniture produced during the late 19th to early 20th century. Rather than assigning an exact production year without further documentation, we would conservatively date the piece to circa 1900 / early 20th century. The repeated maker's stamps, dovetailed construction and surviving handwritten workshop measurements provide particularly wonderful evidence of its handmade origins. Dimensions:22.5” L x 14.5” D x 29.5” H Condition & Disclaimers: Condition grade: Very Good Condition (visible antique age-related irregularities) The wood presents beautifully with minor scratches, surface wear, finish variation and small marks consistent with age and use. One area of veneer is missing along the upper interior portion of a drawer and is primarily noticeable when the drawer is opened. The marquetry retains beautiful detail and color, while the decorative metal mounts, trim and sabots show natural oxidation, wear and patina consistent with age. Interior drawer surfaces retain expected wear, markings and handwritten workshop measurements associated with the handmade construction of the piece. The marble top shows natural veining and minor age-related surface variation. As with all antique furniture, expect signs of age, use, movement and imperfection consistent with its history. The piece is signed A. Bougenier beneath the marble and to the underside of each drawer. Our pieces are thoughtfully sourced and offered as-is in antique or vintage condition. Time, use, and history naturally leave their mark, and we believe those details are part of the beauty. While we make every effort to highlight notable imperfections, subtle variations should be expected.
