A really beautiful late 19th century/early 20th century French three-drawer commode with a thick gray marble top, warm walnut case, brass hardware and the clean, straight lines associated with Louis XVI furniture. This one is such a good example of a piece that feels refined without being overly formal. The front is made up of three full-width drawers, each framed with simple molded trim and finished with two brass pulls and a centered decorative escutcheon. The front corners are softly fluted and continue down into tapered legs with brass-capped feet. The top is a substantial slab of gray marble with white veining, shaped with rounded projecting corners that follow the form of the case. The darker marble against the warm wood is probably my favorite part of the piece—it gives it just enough contrast while still being incredibly easy to use in a room. We believe the primary exterior wood is walnut, with other hardwoods used within the secondary construction and drawer boxes, which is typical of antique French furniture. The walnut has a warm honey-brown tone with beautiful natural grain and very little distraction from the overall shape of the piece. The quality of the construction is also really nice. The drawers are built with traditional dovetail joinery, substantial solid-wood sides and deep interiors. The back is made from wide old wood boards rather than a modern thin backing, and the entire piece has a nice weight and solidity to it. It is one of those pieces that would work just about anywhere: as a bedroom chest, between two windows, in an entry, beneath a mirror, or even used as storage in a dining or living room. History The design is rooted in the Louis XVI style, which became popular in France during the late 18th century and moved away from the heavier curves of Louis XV furniture toward straighter lines, symmetry, tapered legs and more restrained decoration. French cabinetmakers continued making furniture in this style throughout the 19th century, especially because the proportions were practical and the look translated so well into everyday interiors. Based on the construction, hardware, overall proportions and style, we would conservatively date this piece to the 19th century, likely the latter half of the 1800s, early 20th century. The fluted front stiles, tapered legs, rectangular drawer fronts, brass escutcheons and marble top are all very typical of the continued Louis XVI tradition in French furniture. Condition & Disclaimers: Condition grade: Very Good Condition (visible antique age-related irregularities) Overall, this piece is in really nice antique condition with nothing major to note. The wood shows minor scratches, surface wear, finish variation, small marks and natural patina consistent with age and use. The brass hardware shows expected oxidation and age-related wear. One area along the upper portion of a front corner stile has clearly been restored at some point in the piece’s history, as photographed. The repair is visible upon close inspection but does not take away from the overall presentation or function of the piece. The gray marble top shows expected natural veining, light surface wear and minor age-related variation. No major damage is noted. The drawers retain traditional dovetail construction and function well. Interior drawer surfaces show minor expected wear from use. As with all antique furniture, expect signs of age, use, movement and imperfection consistent with its history.
