This time close — tight on Joshua, the tumbleweed raised against the blazing sun, the dried branches catching the light and going almost translucent, a halo of dead plant and solar flare above his head. Black coat, white shirt open at the collar, gold hoop earring, gaze steady and turned slightly away. Somewhere in the far background, tiny against the horizon, another figure stands with a camera. The road cuts behind him. A weathered sign marks nothing in particular. The sun is shooting directly through the tumbleweed. That's the shot. That's the moment Hoeffgen moved in close and waited for — the light doing something impossible with something completely ordinary, found on the side of a Texas highway and held up by a person who understood instinctively what it could become. Two images, one tumbleweed, two entirely different truths about the same afternoon on the same stretch of road. The wide shot is about the landscape. This one is about the person inside it.
