Marshmallow leaf helps coat the mucous membranes of the respiratory and digestive tracts, soothing irritation. Marshmallow leaf and marshmallows (the treat) share a name because the plant has been used as part of herbal remedies mixed with honey for thousands of years, with the plant then being used in confectionaries in the 1800s. Its shifted from a medicinal lozenge to candy as marshmallow root was switched out for gelatin, and increased amounts of sugar were added to produce the fluffy texture and sweet flavor. Marshmallow leaf is the base of our Throat Soothe tea, and its neutral flavor makes it a great base for other blends. Steeped for a long time it becomes thicker and coats the throat.
