Martell Caractère 750ML is a French cognac distilled from estate-grown Borderies cru grapes, bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof) in a 750ml format. Launched in 2013, this expression distinguishes itself within the Martell portfolio by sourcing fruit exclusively from the vines of Domaine de Jean Martell — the house's own vineyards in the prized Borderies growing region — rather than relying on the multi-vineyard blending typical of most cognac production.Quick Facts: ABV: 40% | Origin: Borderies, Cognac, France | Estate Vineyard Expression | Distillery: MartellProduction & HeritageMartell, founded in 1715 by Jean Martell, is the oldest of the major cognac houses. Caractère is produced from Ugni Blanc (Trebbiano) grapes cultivated on the Domaine de Jean Martell estate in the Borderies cru, a small sub-region prized for its round, violet-scented eaux-de-vie. The spirit undergoes double distillation in traditional copper Charentais pot stills without lees — a hallmark of Martell's distillation philosophy that yields a cleaner, more refined distillate. The resulting eaux-de-vie are then matured in fine-grain French oak barrels, contributing structure and subtle toasted character before blending.Tasting NotesAroma: The nose opens with bright pear and fresh citrus before settling into warmer layers of cinnamon, vanilla, and dried stone fruit. Hints of prune and raisin add depth without heaviness.Taste: On entry, lemon zest and tangerine peel give the palate an immediate lift. The mid-palate softens with suggestions of baked orchard fruit and gentle spice, keeping the profile approachable yet layered enough to hold interest.Finish: The finish extends with surprising length, landing on notes of buttery pastry and plum jam. A subtle warmth lingers alongside fruit sweetness without turning cloying. How to Drink CaractèreServed neat or over a single large ice cube, Caractère lets its Borderies fruit character speak clearly; a few drops of water can further open the citrus and spice notes. It also performs well in cocktails: Sidecar — the bright citrus profile pairs naturally with Cointreau and fresh lemon juice. French 75 (Cognac variation) — Caractère's clean distillate and lemon-forward palate integrate seamlessly with champagne and simple syrup. Stinger — the pastry and vanilla undertones complement white crème de menthe for a classic after-dinner serve. Best For Introducing someone to estate-origin cognac without a steep price barrier Building a cognac comparison tasting alongside other VS or VSOP expressions Mixing cocktails that benefit from a fruit-forward, clean-distilled brandy Gifting a spirits enthusiast who appreciates terroir-driven production Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat does Caractère taste like? Martell Caractère leads with bright citrus — lemon and tangerine peel — followed by baked pear, gentle cinnamon spice, and a long finish of pastry and plum jam. It is fruit-forward and approachable, with enough complexity to reward attentive sipping. How does Caractère compare to Hennessy VS? Both sit at 40% ABV and target the accessible end of the cognac market, but Caractère draws exclusively from Borderies cru estate fruit, giving it a more fruit-driven, rounded profile. Hennessy VS blends eaux-de-vie from multiple crus and tends toward broader wood and spice influence on the palate. Is Caractère good for cocktails? Its clean double-distilled character and citrus-forward flavor make it a strong cocktail base, especially in drinks like the Sidecar or French 75 where bright fruit notes are an asset.Where is Caractère made? Caractère is produced at the Martell distillery in the town of Cognac, in southwestern France's Charente department. The grapes are grown on the Domaine de Jean Martell estate within the Borderies cru, the smallest of Cognac's six growing regions. What foods pair well with Caractère? Its citrus and pastry notes complement duck rillettes, apricot tart, aged Comté cheese, roasted pork with fruit chutney, and dark chocolate with candied orange peel — each pairing echoing a different element of the cognac's flavor spectrum. What sizes does Caractère come in? The standard release is a 750ml bottle; availability in other formats may vary by market. Is Caractère worth the price? Caractère positions as an accessible, entry-level estate cognac from the oldest major house in the region, offering single-estate Borderies provenance at a price point competitive with mainstream VS bottlings from other producers. Why Caractère?What separates Martell Caractère from the crowded field of entry-level cognacs is its estate-vineyard sourcing. While most cognacs at this tier blend eaux-de-vie from across multiple crus and contract growers, Caractère draws exclusively from the Domaine de Jean Martell in the Borderies — a provenance claim uncommon at this price level. Martell's signature lees-free distillation further sharpens the fruit clarity, resulting in a spirit that reads more like a carefully defined single-origin expression than a broadly blended house style. For drinkers exploring what terroir means in the context of cognac, Caractère offers a concrete, affordable entry point backed by more than three centuries of distilling expertise.
