Maru, often called “Chocolate Persimmon,” is a classic pollination-variant Asian persimmon known for its rich, sweet flavor and distinctive brown “chocolate” colored flesh when pollinated. The medium to large fruits ripen in mid to late fall, turning a deep orange on the outside while developing their characteristic darker flesh inside. The flavor is very sweet, rich, and spicy, making it excellent for fresh eating. Unlike many astringent persimmons, Maru can often be enjoyed while still firm when well pollinated, though unpollinated fruits should soften before eating. The tree is vigorous, productive, and attractive in the landscape, with glossy green foliage and excellent ornamental value.
