Sometimes referred to as a beast roller, this type of massage roller has compressed foam lumps or knobs on it. The knobs are designed to replicate the action of a physiotherapist pressing their thumbs. It gives deep penetration of muscle to open tissue, but the flexible knobs give way if they meet bone and also flex slightly as they roll over the muscle fibers. The roller serves as a self massage and it is useful as part of a warm up and fitness routine, as it can improve circulation and relieve muscle pain.
