Massive Attack – Mezzanine Released in 1998, Mezzanine marked a decisive shift for Bristol’s trip-hop pioneers. Where Blue Lines and Protection leaned into warmth and soul, this third album turns inward—darker, colder, and more fractured. The bass is deeper, the textures more abrasive, and the mood more tense throughout. That tension runs through tracks like “Inertia Creeps”, all unease and repetition, while “Teardrop”—featuring Elisabeth Fraser of Cocteau Twins—cuts through with something more fragile and luminous. The album’s edge is sharpened by internal friction within the group, but the result is a record that holds together with clarity and intent. Bleak, but precise—Mezzanine remains a defining moment not just for Massive Attack, but for the wider trip-hop landscape. This CD is available to order from our warehouse stock.
