Matariki - Nga Mata o te Ariki Tawhirimatea Ranginui (Fathersky) and Papatuanuku (Motherearth) were separated by their children. Tawhirimatea (God of wind) was pained by this action; he tore his eyes out, and threw them into the heavens, creating Nga Mata o te Ariki Tawhirimatea (The eyes of the God Tawhirimatea).
