Matthew Shlian's series "Static" explores the notion of repeated patterns; each 12 x 12 x 7/8 piece consists of the same six shapes, arranged differently. Static comes in three editions, white, black, and silver and is limited to 20 pieces. Artist Statement: It was an exploration in form, repetition and balance, a slow methodical building one after another. There is something really simple about them, very Montessori.The static part didn't come until I was documenting the pieces and laying them on each other-- removing layers in a rapid compression let me see them in a new way. The underlying patterns were only revealed via animation.
