Matua Sauvignon Blanc is a Marlborough, New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc bottled at 13.0% ABV in a standard 750ml format. Quick Facts: ABV: 13.0% | Origin: Marlborough, New Zealand | Varietal: 100% Sauvignon Blanc | Producer: Matua Winery Production & Heritage Matua was founded in 1974 when brothers Bill and Ross Spence planted New Zealand's first commercial Sauvignon Blanc vines, a move that effectively launched the country's now-iconic wine category. The grapes for this expression are sourced from vineyards across the Wairau and Awatere Valley sub-regions of Marlborough, areas known for their long sunshine hours and cool nighttime temperatures. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, preserving the aromatic intensity and bright acidity that define Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Tasting Notes Aroma: Passionfruit and ripe citrus dominate the nose immediately, followed by layers of blackcurrant leaf and a flinty mineral edge. A subtle herbaceous quality — dried basil and lemongrass — adds complexity beneath the fruit. Taste: The palate opens with bright, tangy lemon citrus that hits the front of the tongue with vivid acidity. Mid-palate, concentrated passionfruit and green melon emerge alongside classic cut grass and gooseberry notes. A textural quality builds toward a taut, juicy peak that balances ripe fruit against crisp minerality. Finish: Persistent and long, with salted pink grapefruit and a hint of bell pepper lingering on the close. The finish stays fresh and clean, without any heavy or cloying sweetness. How to Drink Matua Sauvignon Blanc Serve well chilled between 6–10°C (43–50°F) to allow the aromatic intensity to express itself without muting the fruit. This wine is excellent on its own as an aperitif but also works beautifully in wine-based cocktails. A classic Spritzer (wine, soda water, citrus twist) highlights Matua's natural effervescence of flavor. A Hugo Cocktail (wine, elderflower, mint, soda) plays off the wine's existing herbal complexity. A Sauvignon Blanc Sangria with tropical fruits like passionfruit and kiwi amplifies the wine's signature Marlborough character.
