There is a nice surf break near me in Matunuck, Rhode Island where late winter swells provide good waves. This inspired the development of a wooden surf kayak to experience the wave energy. The Matunuck surf kayak is designed with a hard rail, round tail, rockered nose, flat midsection, and slightly kicked tail. The plywood bottom is relatively flat with a slight channel at the bow, resulting in a fast and responsive kayak that can carve waves well. The dramatic duck-tail stern holds waves nicely and is visually striking. While the prototype had a tri-fin setup, standard finboxes can be installed to suit local conditions. Although it resembles a whitewater playboat, this design is intended for ocean surfing.
