The McDonnell Douglas F-4E Phantom II is a legendary third-generation, two-seat jet fighter-bomber, most notably upgraded with an internal M61A1 20mm Vulcan cannon and improved J79-GE-17 engines. It served as the primary USAF multi-role workhorse in the late Vietnam War and throughout the Cold War, featuring a top speed of Mach 2.23 (approx. 1,473 mph). A total of 1,387 F-4E Phantom II aircraft were built. It was the most-produced variant of the F-4 Phantom II, with the majority manufactured by McDonnell Douglas in the U.S. and an additional 138 (or 127, depending on the source) built under license by Mitsubishi in Japan.
