It was released in July 1997, coinciding wit h the start of McLachlan's Lilith Fair tour. As the organizer of this tour, McLachlan was on the cover of magazines across America and Canada. Surfacing benefited enormously from this. The album was a commercial success worldwide, reached a top position on the Canadian Albums chart and went to number two on the US Billboard 200.
