Quick Facts: ABV: 13.5% | Origin: Lodi, California | Style: Estate-Grown Red Blend | Producer: McManis Family Vineyards Production & Heritage McManis Family Vineyards farms estate vineyards in Lodi, California, and is the steward of the River Junction Appellation—the third-smallest American Viticultural Area in the state, covering just 1,300 acres at the confluence of the Stanislaus and San Joaquin rivers. That river basin runs 2–5 degrees cooler than surrounding farmland, producing a pronounced diurnal temperature swing that helps Pinot Noir retain natural acidity while developing ripe fruit character. The grapes undergo 6–9 days of fermentation on the skins before pressing, with the wine finishing fermentation in stainless steel tanks to preserve bright fruit expression. Small proportions of Petit Verdot and Teroldego are blended in to add structure and depth. Tasting Notes Aroma: Light purple in the glass, the nose opens with ripe red cherry and strawberry cream before shifting into raspberry and delicate violet florals. A subtle thread of vanilla and cola appears underneath, adding complexity without dominating the fruit. Taste: The entry is silky and fruit-forward, led by fresh cherry and strawberry. At the mid-palate, mulled plum and warm cinnamon notes emerge alongside a broad, relaxed texture. Vanilla undertones add a gentle sweetness that rounds out the red fruit core without turning heavy. Finish: Clean and lasting, with lingering cherry and a whisper of baking spice. The finish stays light on its feet, avoiding the tannic grip common in more extracted styles. How to Drink McManis Pinot Noir Serve lightly chilled at 58–62°F to highlight the bright red fruit and silky texture; this is a Pinot that drinks well straight from the glass without needing time to open. A classic Pinot Noir Spritz works beautifully here, using the wine's clean finish with soda water and a lemon twist for a refreshing warm-weather pour. It also performs in a Kalimotxo (red wine and cola), where the existing cola-inflected oak notes create a natural bridge. For a more refined cocktail, try it in a New York Sour—floated over a whiskey sour, the wine's cherry brightness and light body add color and fruit without overwhelming the base spirit. Bogle tends to lean a bit leaner and more straightforward in its fruit profile. Is McManis Pinot Noir good for beginners? Is McManis Pinot Noir worth the price? McManis positions as a value-tier California Pinot Noir that consistently punches above its weight—a 92-point score from The Tasting Panel and 90 points from Wine Enthusiast confirm strong critical recognition for a wine at this accessible price level. Why McManis Pinot Noir? What separates this bottle from the crowded field of budget California Pinot Noir is the estate-grown sourcing from Lodi's unique microclimate, where the cool river confluence produces the kind of diurnal temperature swings that give Pinot Noir genuine acidity and aromatic lift. The unconventional decision to blend in small amounts of Petit Verdot and Teroldego adds a structural backbone that pure Pinot Noir at this price point often lacks. Back-to-back critical recognition—92 points from The Tasting Panel and 90 from Wine Enthusiast—suggests this is more than a grocery-aisle afterthought. For everyday drinking, it delivers a level of complexity and polish that makes reaching for the next price tier feel unnecessary.
