This web of artificial intelligences was so vast that Zomencor was always hiring, and their employees not only managed the data centers, but were also trained, like all those who worked aboard, to operate the Arboretum's master manual and analog controls in cases of emergency. This was a necessary skill set, since equal rights were granted to artificial intelligences in many of the star systems that Arboretum 829 traveled. In such systems all computer operations, even those that could not reasonably be considered as making use of artificial intelligence, were brought to a halt, and this because laws in every which place had nuanced definitions as to what could be considered AI. In some systems, any kind of manipulation of an artificial intelligence was considered a form of slave driving.
