Originally found in rice paddies and marshes, it has been kept as an ornamental pet in Japan since the 17th century. Appearance: While wild medaka are typically silvery-brown, selective breeding has created hundreds of varieties featuring colors like vibrant orange (Yokihi), deep black (Orochi), and shimmering blue (Miyuki). Size: They typically grow to about 1.5 inches (4 cm). Behavior: They are peaceful, active schooling fish that are often friendly enough to "beg" for food at the front of a tank.
