The album tackles British imperialism’s legacy wi th lyrics woven into a rich mix of dub, country, noise, rock, electronica, punk, music hall, polka, and even waltz. Drawing from their global journey—from Leeds to California and Siberia—the Mekons create a sound reminiscent of The Chills and early R.E.M. Highlights include “Mudcrawlers,” featuring Jon Langford on vocals about Irish famine and refugees, the sharp and defiant “War Economy,” and Rico’s haunting “Fallen Leaves,” a Celtic-infused climate breakdown lament with Susie Honeyman’s violin.
