Melatonin is produced primarily in the pineal gland but also in the bone marrow, platelets, GI tract, eyes, skin and lymphocytes. Its chemical precursor is serotonin, a neurotransm itter derived from tryptophan. Serotonin must be acetylated and methylated to form melatonin.
