Melgisorb Ag is a sterile, highly absorbent antimicrobial alginate dressing containing ionic silver, designed for the management of moderately to heavily exuding wounds where infection is present or there is an increased risk of infection. The dressing combines high-G calcium alginate and carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) with an ionic silver complex. As wound exudate is absorbed, the alginate fibres form a soft gel that helps maintain a moist wound-healing environment and supports autolytic debridement. At the same time, silver ions are released into the wound environment, providing broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. The ionic silver complex releases silver ions, providing antimicrobial activity within the wound environment. How to use: Debride the wound where necessary and cleanse or irrigate it according to the recommended wound-care protocol. Remove excess cleansing solution from the surrounding skin. Select a Melgisorb Ag dressing that is slightly larger than the wound. The dressing can be cut or folded to fit the wound as required. Apply Melgisorb Ag directly to the wound bed. For deep or cavity wounds, loosely fill the wound with the cavity dressing. Do not tightly pack the wound and do not allow the dressing to unnecessarily overlap the wound margins. Cover and secure with an appropriate secondary dressing suitable for the amount of wound exudate. Dressing change frequency: Dressing-change frequency depends on: Amount of wound exudate Condition of the wound Infection status Condition of the surrounding skin Absorbency of the secondary dressing Clinical assessment Initially, it may be necessary to change Melgisorb Ag every 24 hours, particularly in highly exuding wounds. As the wound improves and exudate decreases, dressing-change frequency may be reduced according to clinical assessment. Do not use: Directly on dry or very lightly exuding wounds To control heavy bleeding For surgical implantation Melgisorb Ag may assist with minor bleeding from superficial wounds, but it is not intended to control significant haemorrhage. If the dressing adheres because the wound has become dry, moisten it thoroughly with sterile saline before attempting removal. Excessive use of petroleum-based ointments may impair dressing performance. Avoid contact with electrodes or conductive gels during electronic measurements such as ECG or EEG. Melgisorb Ag must be removed before MRI examinations. For clinically infected wounds, topical silver treatment does not replace systemic antimicrobial treatment or other appropriate infection management where this is clinically required. There are limited data on prolonged or repeated use of silver-containing dressings, particularly in children and neonates.
