Melocactus matanzanus is a Cuban species famous for the bizarre red, bristly "cap" (cephalium) that forms on top of the green body once the plant reaches maturity. Once this cap fo rms, the green body stops growing entirely, and all new growth happens in the cap, which produces tiny flowers and berries. It remains relatively small throughout its life, making it a perfect exotic specimen for indoor collections. Unlike desert cacti, this tropical species prefers bright light combined with warmth and slightly higher humidity. It appreciates regular misting and should not be allowed to stay thirsty for too long, although the soil must still be well-draining. Keep it in a warm room year-round, as it is very sensitive to cold temperatures.
