Methol's refreshing aroma and cooling action have led to its widespread use in balms, liniments, rubs and other personal care products. Also used extensively in steam-rooms - place crystals in a bowl for menthol aromatherapy; do not place directly on sauna rocks. Menthol crystals act as a local anesthetic and will give that "cool" feeling when applied to the skin.
