One such flag, often overlooked but rich in meaning, is the flag of the United States Merchant Marine. Though less familiar to many Americans than other military service flags, the Merchant Marine flag represents a critical force in the defense and economic strength of our nation. For over two centuries, the U.S. Merchant Marine has played a pivotal role in American history—delivering troops and supplies during wartime and keeping commerce moving in peacetime. Its flag is a proud emblem of that dual mission. What Is the U.S. Merchant Marine? Before we explore the flag, it’s important to understand what the Merchant Marine is. Unlike the Navy or Coast Guard, the Merchant Marine isn’t a uniformed military service under normal conditions. Instead, it's made up of civilian-owned and operated commercial ships and the mariners who crew them. These ships transport goods, fuel, and people across domestic and international waters. But in times of war or national emergency, the Merchant Marine becomes a crucial auxiliary to the U.S. Navy, delivering supplies and supporting military logistics. Merchant mariners have served—and died—alongside soldiers and sailors in every major conflict since the Revolutionary War. Early Maritime Flags: Foundations of Identity The origins of a Merchant Marine-specific flag date back to the early years of the republic. In the 18th and 19th centuries, American merchant ships flew a variety of ensigns to identify themselves at sea, primarily the U.S. ensign (the stars and stripes). During World War I and especially World War II, the U.S. government began to more formally recognize the role and identity of the Merchant Marine. During World War II, U.S. merchant ships came under heavy attack, and thousands of merchant mariners gave their lives to deliver essential war material to Allied forces. This heroic sacrifice led to greater public recognition—and eventually, the creation of a formal symbol. The Merchant Marine Flag: Design and Symbolism The official U.S. Merchant Marine flag was adopted by the Maritime Administration (MARAD), a division of the U.S. Department of Transportation, which oversees maritime commerce and the merchant fleet. Here’s what the flag features: A dark blue field, symbolizing the ocean. The emblem of the United States Maritime Service in the center: An eagle with outstretched wings perched atop a fouled anchor. Surrounding the eagle, a gold-bordered circle with the words “United States Merchant Marine”. At the bottom, the founding year: 1775—a reminder that the Merchant Marine’s roots reach back to the same year as the Navy and Marine Corps. A gold fringe is often used on ceremonial versions of the flag. This emblem powerfully captures the service’s ties to maritime tradition, its close relationship with the military, and its enduring role in national security. At Gates Flag & Banner, we take care to replicate every detail of this flag with precision and respect. For the mariners who’ve stood in harm’s way without the fanfare of rank or uniform, this flag speaks volumes. A Symbol of Service—In War and Peace Today, the U.S. Merchant Marine flag is flown during ceremonies honoring merchant mariners, at U.S. maritime academies, and at military observances such as Memorial Day and Veterans Day. It’s often displayed alongside the flags of the armed services, especially in recognition of the U.S. Merchant Marine’s formal status as a component of the nation’s defense during wartime. It’s also used to represent the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) in Kings Point, New York—one of the five U.S. federal service academies—and by graduates who serve in both commercial and military maritime roles. Honoring an Unsung Legacy The Merchant Marine has long been one of the unsung heroes of American military and economic power. Its members don’t always wear uniforms, and their service often goes unnoticed, but their contributions are essential—especially in times of crisis. At Gates Flag & Banner, we’re proud to offer the U.S. Merchant Marine flag as part of our commitment to honoring every branch of service—uniformed or civilian, battlefield or bridge deck. When we craft this flag, we honor not only sailors and captains, but also a legacy of courage under fire and resilience on the high seas.
