Merlot Redbud Tree is a perfect spring flowering tree for smaller landscapes. This new hybrid sets new standards for redbud trees with purple leaves that won't burn in the hot summer sun. Outstanding Dark Purple to Burgundy foliage is similar to Forest Pansy Redbud, but Merlot Redbud has excellent drought tolerance with thicker, glossier leaves that stand up to summer heat. The tree's deep pink spring blossoms will have your yard filled with all the good creatures of butterflies, birds and bees, and none of the bad! Flowers are visited by hummingbirds, butterflies, honey bees, and many other species of bees. The seeds are eaten by finches, juncos, nuthatches, cardinals, and rose-breasted grosbeaks. Care Redbud need full sun to partial shade in moderately fertile well-drained moist soils. Keep the soil evenly moist the first year and water during periods of drought thereafter. Be sure to choose your site carefully as redbuds do not transplant well due to a deep tap root. Best grown in zones 5-9. Growing Habit Redbuds always remain small, maturing at 12 to 15 feet in both width and height. They generally grow as a small tree with a divided trunk close to the ground. The spreading crown is usually rounded to flat-topped. It can develop as a multi-trunk shrub. Redbuds growing in the sun will be compact and rounded; when grown in shade, their form is loose, open and tall. Toxicity Deer & rabbit resistant.
