Holland baroque offers a colourful sonic ride through the microcosm with this soundtrack for Pim Zwier's Metamorphosis, a film about the extraordinary 17th-century artist Maria Sibylla Merian and the fascinating lives of the insects she studies. Judith Steenbrink composed new music, a combination of nature sounds, Baroque-inspired dances and groovy melodies. Together with Paul Gies' sound design, this results in a sound world as iridescent, seductive, and original as Zwier's film. The music for Metamorphosis is like the caterpillar in the film: sharply zoomed in and then magnified. Holland Baroque recorded music played incredibly soft, which was then magnified due to the historic acoustics of the Pieterskerk in Utrecht as well as the recording technique. This makes it very fragile and yet powerful: just like the caterpillars and butterflies in the film. Thus the soundtrack follows the caterpillar-to-butterfly transformation, a moment uniquely captured by Pim Zwier. Holland Baroque chose rare 17th-century instruments such as the psalterium, serpent, baroque harp, viola da gamba and period percussion. In addition to compositions by Judith Steenbrink, the album includes improvisations and music by Adam Reincken, a Dutch composer and contemporary of Maria Sybilla Merian.
