It was discovered in 1576 by Spanish explorers in Chaco, Argentina; thousands of pieces have been found near the impact craters, the largest weighing an immense 37 tons. Scientists estimate the fall at around 3,950–5,800 years ago, from radiocarbon dating of charred trees in the vicinity. Campo del Cielo is Spanish for "Field of the Sky" — a piece of iron older than any human artefact you can hold, that arrived while the pyramids were being built.
